Rugby Australia will forge ahead with five Super Rugby teams, but the board is principally torn over what direction to take Super Rugby in a decision that has ramifications for New Zealand.

As RA Chairman Hamish McLennan told foxsports.com.au, the board is “oscillating between the benefits of a local competition versus a competition where you play the best in the world”.

Their indecisiveness comes after Australia’s drubbing in Super Rugby, where New Zealand’s five franchises claimed 23 of the 25 matches.

The scoreboard might not have told the full story, but it showcased the significant gulf in depth between the two nations.

As Wallabies coach Dave Rennie said recently, “I think if our Wallabies C team had to play an All Blacks C team there would be a massive margin.”
