Five-a-side beach footy is returning to The Strand this weekend, and several retired NRL stars will be playing.
Johnathan Thurston will be putting on the jersey again for the Castle Kings which he says “haven’t lost a match yet”.
“We’ve got a few young kids from the schools who’ll sub in on the team,” Mr Thurston said.
“There is a lot of difference between league and Beach5s. You’re running in the sand for one so it’s harder on the calves.”
Started in 2018, Beach5s is described as being a mix of all the best bits from rugby league, union and touch, incorporating a two-second rule, rapid substitutions, no scums and no line outs on a tiny playing field.
Townsville City Council councillor Maurie Soars said for the last five years Beach5s has been a favourite event in Townsville.
