Blues beat Highlanders, score, results, All Blacks

After 18 long, frustrating years, the Blues are Super Rugby champions once again.

For the first time since 2003, when Carlos Spencer was in a tussle for the All Blacks No.10 jersey with Andrew Mehrtens, the Blues are New Zealand’s kings of Super Rugby.

Well, kind of.

After the Crusaders claimed Super Rugby Aotearoa, the Blues smoked Australia’s five franchises, with Scott Robertson’s men left lament their lack of bonus points which saw them miss the stand-alone final despite going through undefeated, and then edged past the Highlanders 25-15 at Eden Park.

After Harry Plummer’s excellent sideline penalty to give the home side a 16-15 lead after 70 minutes, replacement flanker Blake Gibson scored to deliver the knockout blow in the 76th minute. Plummer’s wide conversion put the result beyond doubt with a conversion to put the Blues out beyond a converted try.
