Rayner steers Lions to AFL win over Saints

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan has hailed Cam Rayner’s match-winning performance as the best of his career after the Lions boosted their AFL top-four prospects with a 15-point victory over St Kilda.

Rayner (four goals) and Hugh McCluggage (23 disposals) starred for Brisbane, who dominated the first half at Marvel Stadium on Friday night and resisted a stirring fightback from their hosts.

Mason Wood (four goals) and Tim Membrey (three) helped drag the Saints back into the contest after they had trailed by as much 26 points just before half-time.

But a string of wasted chances in front of goal – most notably by Max King, who finished with 0.5 – ultimately proved costly for St Kilda as Brisbane steadied to post a 12.9 (81) to 9.12 (66) win.
