Smith plots new path to Olympics

Cameron Smith will have to get creative if he wants to make the Olympics and that could mean venturing outside the LIV bubble more often to play.

Golfer Cameron Smith has spoken about the Broncos and Origin ahead of the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland in Brisbane.

Since his big-money defection to the Saudi-backed league last year, former world No.2 Smith’s ranking has dropped to 18 having played just six events eligible for world ranking points in 2023 for two top-10 major finishes and second at the recent Hong Kong Open.

As of last week, Queensland superstar Smith, who partnered great mate Marc Leishman at the Tokyo Games, was still well placed to qualify for Paris with an Olympic golf ranking of 12th.

However, with rankings projections pushing him outside qualification by early next year, Smith will consider playing some extra events on next year’s Asian Tour – where LIV Golf players are permitted to play – to earn crucial points.
