Luke Parker role key in Sydney AFL triumph

Luke Parker played a pivotal role in clamping down on Collingwood’s in-form midfielder Jordan De Goey as Sydney withstood a “scary” finish to secure a spot in the AFL grand final.

The Swans’ co-captain went straight to De Goey for the opening bounce and immediately set the tone for a fast start with the first clearance of the match.

Parker followed up minutes later with the opening goal when he was the only player to respond after the Swans earned a free kick, taking the advantage and slotting the ball through as De Goey watched on.

De Goey had averaged 25 disposals a game and kicked three goals in the Pies’ first two finals but was restricted to only 12 touches and went scoreless as a disciplined Parker kept him in check.

The Swans 29-year-old on-baller was just as good going the other way and gathered 23 disposals to be one of the best afield in the preliminary final at the SCG.
