Any chance of harmony in golf’s civil war appeared to be shot down on Thursday amid a tension-filled day for LIV Golf members competing at the Open Championship.

The rebel golfers stood out like sore thumbs on the ancient fairways of St Andrews, where they were subject to jibes from the crowd before testy exchanges with reporters after play.

Ian Poulter was the first big-name LIV Golf player to tee off in round one and, despite it being the crack of dawn, he was met with boos at the iconic first tee.
