Rory McIlroy has overcome some late drama on the 72nd hole to end his 18-month PGA Tour win drought with victory at the Wells Fargo Championship on Monday (AEST).
McIlroy took a two-shot lead onto the 18th tee at Quail Hollow before a badly-pulled drive placed his ball inside the water hazard area running alongside the fairway’s left.
His ball stayed dry but was badly embedded in heavy rough on the bank of the creek, leading to lengthy consultation with his caddie about where to hit his second shot.

In the end, he decided not to take the shot at all, instead taking a drop which left him with just three strokes to work with to hold off clubhouse leader, Abraham Ancer, at nine-under.
