Professional golfer Matthew Sturmer on trial accused of hit-and-run

A professional Perth golfer accused of a hit-and-run that killed an elderly man on the freeway in October 2019 claims he was suffering a medical episode at the time and did not have control of his body.

Matthew Sturmer, 47, is on trial in the Perth District Court, accused of dangerously driving his Holden Rodeo ute north along Kwinana Freeway near South Perth when he crashed into a car, sending it spinning out of control, before ploughing into the back of the 72-year-old’s motorcycle around 4pm.

The motorcyclist died at the scene.

Sturmer accepts he was involved in the crashes and drove for more than one kilometre with the Harley Davidson trapped under his car before stopping, but claimed it was because he was suffering a seizure-like episode.
