A thrilling three-way shootout and wild weather injected some life into the Memorial Tournament on Monday (AEST), but it will still likely be remembered for who didn’t win the event, rather than who did.
For the record, Patrick Cantlay held off Scottie Scheffler and downed Collin Morikawa in a playoff at Muirfield Village to claim a winner’s cheque of A$2.16m.
That cheque had Jon Rahm’s name on it on Saturday before the Spaniard was forced to withdraw following a positive COVID-19 test.
He held a whopping six-shot, 54-hole lead before he was delivered the news beside the 18th green.
The final round inevitably had an eerie feeling to it with the multimillion-dollar cheque and PGA Tour title somehow feeling like a consolation prize.
