Bryson DeChambeau lost to Patrick Cantlay in a thrilling six-hole playoff at the BMW Championship on Monday morning (AEST) to gain pole position for the finale of golf’s race for $US15 million ($A20m).
American Cantlay drained a long-range birdie putt on the 18th hole to force a playoff with DeChambeau and drained clutch putt after clutch putt with his performance described as a “Houdini act” by commentators.
With yet another clutch, 17-foot putt made at the sixth playoff hole, the pressure was now back on DeChambeau in a showdown described as “off the charts”.
But he missed his nine-foot putt to eventually hand Cantlay the win, and the winner’s cheque of $1,710,000 (A$2.3m) in one of the most outrageous performances coming down the stretch.
