In a throw back in time, euphoric fans swarmed like bees to the honey pot as Phil Mickelson became golf’s oldest major winner.
As the 50-year-old held his nerve to claim his sixth major with a stunning nine-iron from the first cut of rough to seal the deal, fans charged up the 18th fairway at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island engulfing Mickelson and Brooks Koepka like quicksand.
Mickelson had to brush away fans, eager to touch golf royalty. Once he emerged out of the masses, the uber cool veteran waved to his adoring fans.
Koepka, golf’s stone-faced villain, meanwhile was coming to the grips of missing out on another major, having not won since his own PGA Championship success two years ago.
Speaking moments after the historic moment, the American praised his compatriot.
