A Melbourne golf course owned by pubs and pokies baron Bruce Mathieson has quietly been given the green light for housing development, but it’s not a hole in one.

The proposal by billionaire pub and pokies baron, and former Carlton powerbroker Bruce Mathieson to turn the Bulleen golf course he purchased into a housing estate had sat with the Victorian government for about two years awaiting rezoning approval.

Documents seen by the Herald Sun reveal the 25ha site was quietly, conditionally approved for rezoning by Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny in early 2024, but that Mr Mathieson’s company was told to resubmit its proposal to the Manningham council and state government — with changes — before it could start any work.
