A Queensland-based club has withdrawn from the VFL after just one season as the AFL announced an abrupt end to the competition’s home and away season and a rejigged finals series.
The AFL, which runs the VFL, on Wednesday confirmed the Hornets had withdrawn its VFL licence with the intention of joining the QAFL in 2022.
Aspley was one of two stand-alone Queensland-based clubs that opted in to the revamped 22-team VFL season after the NEAFL last year was absorbed into Victoria’s state league competition. Fellow Queensland team Southport finished second on the VFL ladder with the best percentage (179.4%) after losing just one of their 11 games.
