Timekeeping error, clock countdown in Brisbane Lions win over West Coast Eagles

Four-time premiership Hawk Jordan Lewis says a timekeeping controversy may have cost the Western Bulldogs a top four spot.

With 15 minutes remaining in Saturday night’s Brisbane-West Coast match and Fox Footy’s live ladder fluctuating by the minute, Lions midfielder Jarrod Berry took a mark in front of Tom Cole.

The Eagle remonstrated, believing it had been touched, which led the umpire calling time on after he paid the mark.

A few seconds later – once Cole had moved back onto the mark – Fox Footy’s cameras showed the umpire raising his right arm to signal time off.

At this point, the clock should have begun again. But it didn’t. It was 24 seconds until Berry kicked the ball and the clock started ticking.
