The 2021 Grand Final will “almost certainly” be played at Perth’s Optus Stadium due to Melbourne’s ongoing Covid situation, reports the Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph.

Victoria recorded 25 new cases on Sunday, with four under investigation and 13 in the community while infectious, with the current lockdown seemingly unlikely to end at 11:59pm on Thursday as scheduled.

It means the MCG will likely not be able to host a large enough crowd for the AFL to opt to keep the Grand Final at the venue, over the larger crowd numbers likely to be permitted at the 60,000-seat Optus Stadium.

On Fox Footy on Sunday afternoon, Ralph said the pre-finals bye was likely to be scrapped with the preliminary finals and Grand Finals played in Perth.
