Melbourne champion Garry Lyon believes Port Adelaide and Brisbane should be able to host finals at the Adelaide Oval and The Gabba respectively, despite four other finalists facing the prospect of playing at neutral venues.
With Victoria’s lockdown extended by two weeks, New South Wales Covid cases slowly increasing, the pre-finals bye being scrapped and the AFL’s determination to play games in September in front of crowds, any hopes Melbourne, Geelong, the Western Bulldogs and Sydney of hosting early finals at their home grounds have almost been dashed.
Conversely, Queensland and South Australian protocols have allowed capped crowds to attend AFL games in recent weeks. And barring any outbreaks in the two respective states, it means the Lions and Power could play home finals at their preferred grounds, with hopes The Gabba could have a 75 per cent capacity during finals.
