One month ago against the West Indies, Australia managed to field an incredible four wicketkeeper-batsmen in one match. Fill-in skipper Alex Carey, Matthew Wade, Josh Phillippe and Ben McDermott.

It was something of a showdown for Australia’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup – a good old fashioned bat-off for a place in the green and gold. More than that, it had the makings of a tussle to eventually succeed Test captain Tim Paine behind the stumps in the longer format of the game.

Australia won that ODI. Carey hit 67, Phillippe 39, McDermott 28, and Wade just 3. Everything seemed rather rosy.

But that victory masked a serious problem. For Australian selectors, “the keeper-batsman is probably the slot they’d be losing the most sleep over right now,” Australian great Ricky Ponting told cricket.com.au before the tour of the West Indies and Bangladesh.
