The AFL’s umpire dissent rule has again divided opinion, with Collingwood taking full advantage of a controversial call on Friday night.

Western Bulldog Buku Khamis appeared to be pushed out of a marking contest on the wing by Collingwood opponent Isaac Quaynor early in the third term.

When an unhappy Khamis put his arms out, the call was quickly made to penalise the Dogs with a 50-metre penalty for umpire dissent.

“Khamis can’t believe it,” commentator Brian Taylor said.

“I think it was for hands in the air as he didn’t say anything.

“There’s the arms out with a smile. Not a lot of malice in the question.

“Certainly umpire dissent is what was said.”

Fellow commentator Matthew Richardson was shocked by the ruling, which allowed the Magpies to kick their third goal of the match and suddenly close within 28 points.
