Mere moments after etching his name in history, Cameron Smith was asked how it felt to join some of the sport’s great names by winning The Open at St Andrews.

He was told he became the “first Australian in 28 years to win the Open (Greg Norman, the man deemed to be too great a risk to invite for the 150th anniversary of the Open by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, was the winner) and joined the likes of “Tiger (Woods), Seve (Ballesteros) and (Jack) Nicklaus to win the Open here at St Andrews”.

Smith, the 28-year-old who had an answer for everything the Old Course threw at him, including his extraordinary putt from off the green on 17, but was “lost for words” as he struggled to articulate what winning the major meant at the home of golf.
