Cameron Smith has 72nd hole meltdown, misses playoff, prize money

Cameron Smith on Monday (AEST) suffered a 72nd hole meltdown to fall out of the joint lead of the lucrative World Golf Championship event at TPC Southwind.

The Australian was tied for the lead at 16-under heading to the 18th hole where a par would have sent him into a four-way playoff against Hideki Matsuyama, Abraham Ancer and Sam Burns.

But Smith went for the win in regulation — and it spectacularly backfired.

Smith went aggressive on the tee and fired a 346-yard drive well right of the fairway and into the trees.

He then elected not to chip out, but rather to aim for a small gap in-between the pines to try find the green in regulation.

But his recovery attempt struck one of the trees and ricocheted backwards out-of-bounds.
