Australian player Daria Saville conflicted over Russian invasion of Ukraine as tennis controversy intensifies

Tennis has been caught in the current tension, with powerful player bodies, the ATP and WTA, withdrawing ranking points from Wimbledon in response to the club-instigated ban. There has been disagreement across the playing contingent about the suitability and effectiveness of removing points, amid the wider debate of banning athletes.

Asked about whether she had any level of sympathy for Russian players, Saville said: “Yes and no … it’s tough, it’s hard for me also to comment.

“I can’t really go back to Russia now.”

“I definitely do support Ukrainian players. Imagine not having a home. There is worse things happening [than] not playing Wimbledon.”
